Do You Need Certifications to Sell Products on Amazon?

When it comes to the certification, most Amazon sellers recall FDA, FCC, CE certification. Amazon sellers should be clear about product compliance. However, not all products require certification. What’s more, listings of baby products, books, mobile phones, etc. don’t need to be approved.

Common Certifications for Amazon Products

These 6 certifications are quite common among Amazon products, including FDA, FCC, CE, GS, RoHS, PSE. Let’s know more about them one by one.

1. FDA Certification

FDA stands for Food and Drug Administration, which is a federal agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. FDA certification is to control and supervise food safety, prescription, medications, cosmetics, and so on.

2. FCC Certification

The FCC label or the FCC mark is a certification mark on electronic products produced or sold in the United States. Computers, computer accessories, household appliances, electric tools, toys, lights, etc. are required to be FCC compliant. It certifies that the electromagnetic interference from the device is under limits approved by FCC.

3. CE Certification (Europe)

CE is an abbreviation of European Conformity, which should be considered by sellers in the EU. CE certification indicates that a product sold within EEA (European Economic Area) conforms with health, safety, and environmental protection standards.

4. GS Certification (Germany)

Based on the German Product Safety Act, GS (Geprüfte Sicherheit, or Tested Safety) is a certification mark for technical equipment, including home appliances, sports equipment, office supplies, and so on.

5. RoHS Certification (Europe)

The RoHS mark is an obligatory certification mark required by the European Union for electronics, electric appliances, including home appliances, lights, toys, communication devices, etc.

6. PSE Certification (Japan)

The PSE certification is an obligatory safety certification in Japan. A PSE mark is employed on electric appliances, as long as it has a plug.

What Products Are Required to Be FDA Approved?

Apart from knowing the above certifications, people are especially concerned about the FDA certificate. The common FDA-approved products in our daily life are food and dietary supplements, cosmetics, medical devices.

Food and Dietary Supplements

According to Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), owners, operators, or agents who are responsible for domestic or foreign facilities that produce, process, pack, or hold food for consumption in the United States must register with FDA.

Cosmetics

According to Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the filing is voluntary. Cosmetics businesses can register via VCRP or paper forms before they go public. After registration, they will have a registration number and CPIS (Cosmetic Product Ingredient Statement).

To add a new labeler, company information and product information must be submitted, including company name, address, contacts, trademark, ingredients, etc.

Medical Devices

In the United States, the scope of medical devices is extremely wide. Medical equipment in different sizes, toothbrushes, and even consumables like toilet paper, are required to be registered. There are three regulatory classes in total based on the level of control. It is quite evident that Class III means the riskiest. That’s the reason why Class III devices are required the premarket approval application.
