amazon climate pledge everything sellers need to know

The Climate Pledge, funded by Amazon and Global Optimism in 2019, is a commitment to be net-zero carbon by 2040 throughout its business. It is to achieve business sustainability for both Amazon customers and the Earth. To support the development of new technologies and services to lower carbon emissions and promote the preservation of natural resources, Amazon is going to invest $2 billion in the Agreement.

The program aims to help customers easily discover and shop for more sustainable products. Currently, the Climate Pledge Friendly label can be found on over 25,000 products with at least one sustainability certification. In short, Amazon sellers can take advantage of this program to gain more traffic and lower costs for sustainable business development. Let's dive into the detail!

What Does Climate Pledge Friendly Mean for Product Sales?

As Amazon is taking actions to facilitate discovery and shopping for Climate Pledge Friendly products, by labeling qualified products in search results, product pages, and showcasing them in a dedicated section. If you sell "Climate Pledge Friendly" products, considerable traffic and sales growth will follow because many customers are looking for more sustainable products.

How to Qualify for Climate Pledge Friendly?

Amazon "Climate Pledge Friendly" is a program for all selling partners. Another good thing is that there won't be extra charges for participation in Amazon Climate Pledge Friendly.

Up till now, to be eligible for Climate Pledge Friendly, a product must be provided with either Amazon's Compact by Design certification or at least one of 18 Amazon's third-party certifications.

What are these certifications exactly? Let's find out!

"Compact by Design" Certification

As part of the Amazon Climate Pledge Friendly program, a new certification, "Compact by Design" is being introduced by Amazon. It is to distinguish products with more efficient designs, such as with the removal of unnecessary air, water, packaging material, shape, technology, or else, which contributes to differences in product size and weight.

"Compact by Design" products have the ultimate "unit efficiency," which equals to (cubed volume per unit) x (weight per unit). As the unit efficiency is standardized across specific categories, to be qualified for "Compact by Design," a product should have a better-than-average unit efficiency. You may check the category thresholds to know whether you can obtain the certification or not.

How Can Your Brand Participate?

Firstly, you should check the page of Amazon Climate Pledge product categories for Apparel, Beauty, Computers & Office, Electronic, Grocery, and Health & Household.

Next, see whether the products you sell fall into any of the product categories, sub-categories, or departments.

Thirdly, check the certifications and find out which one is the best suited for your products.

The most important step is the application for at least one of the "Climate Pledge Friendly" certifications.

After certified by at least one of Amazon's partner organizations, a product in your store will be eligible for the label of "Climate Pledge Friendly." If they don't have the badge yet, you might contact Amazon by logging in to Seller Central or Vendor Central.

P.S.: The Climate Pledge Friendly badge isn't visible unless you click on the product.
